An outdoor sectional sofa, planned from the corner out

An outdoor sectional sofa earns its place when it fits the corner it stands in. Flexform makes two sectionals for the outdoor catalogue on this site, Camelot and Grandemare, both drawn by Antonio Citterio. Both come as modules, so you plan the shape on paper before you choose a single cushion.

Draw the corner first

Measure the two walls or railings the sofa will back onto, then mark the doors, steps and planters. A sectional blocks more floor than a straight sofa, and the corner seat is the one people fight over, so decide who sits where before you decide on length.

Leave room to move. A path of about three feet in front of the sofa lets people pass without stepping over feet, and a coffee table sits well about 14 to 18 inches from the seat edge. On a narrow terrace, an L with one short arm often beats a long U that leaves no floor.

Pick the shape by the way you sit

An L suits a couple or a small family: one arm for lying down, the other for sitting up. A U suits a group that talks across a table. A long straight run with a chaise end suits a view, because the whole row faces the same way.

Count seats by how people use them outside. On a terrace people sprawl, so a module that seats two in a living room seats one and a half here. If eight people come for dinner in July, plan the sectional for five and add two ottomans that move where needed.

Camelot: the frame on show

Camelot is the newer of the two, in the catalogue since 2025. Its look comes from a contrast the factory describes in its own text: stainless steel braces and a round bar in solid iroko on one side, soft cushions on the other. The braces come in smooth powder-coat colors, white, wine red, khaki green, burnished or matt titanium, and in embossed colors from white and sand to brick, sage green, terracotta, forest green and charcoal. The iroko bar comes natural, stained grey, stained brown or lacquered white.

The seat and back cushions use polyurethane foam and bio-polyester fiber wrapped in a protective water-repellent laminated fabric, and the upholstery on top comes off. Grandemare: a living room sofa outside

Citterio drew Grandemare in 2011 for indoors, and the outdoor version keeps its soft, rounded shapes. It sits on a compact laminated platform on a 316 stainless steel base. The detail worth knowing is the end element in solid iroko: it takes the place of an upholstered armrest and gives you a table top with a compartment for glasses, a book or a remote for the lights. Finishes and the cover

Pick one wood finish for the whole terrace and let the metal color follow it. Natural iroko with burnished or charcoal metal reads warm; stained grey iroko with white metal reads cool. Take swatches outside and look at them at the hour you use the terrace.

Ask for the cover when you order. Flexform makes a waterproof cover for each sectional on request, at extra cost, and recommends using it to keep the sofa close to its first condition. In a wet winter, bring the cushions in as well.
